Organists at St. Stephen’s Cathedral
14th century documents only mention organists by their first names, e.g. Magister Peter around 1370, who may also have been an organ builder. Only later, when musicians were no longer members of the clergy, did the identity of the musicians become clearer. Given the abundance of services at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, organists were frequently not paid for their work.
In some cases they are known as ‘adjuncts’, while later, a second cathedral organist was paid for his services. In the 20th century, many organists provided their services without being officially employed. Since 1984, St. Stephen’s Cathedral has had Cathedral Music Assistants.
